Hunting

Tooele County is conveniently located 30 minutes west of Salt Lake International Airport, and offers sportsmen an outdoor experience that entails some of the most striking landscape in America’s West. Our snow-capped mountains, verdant valleys and sweeping deserts, provide excellent habitat for a variety of wildlife.

BIG GAME

Elk: Limited entry units, and spike-only bull hunting opportunities on the Oquirrh/Stansbury Unit #18, and West Desert/Deep Creek Unit #19. Numerous seasons and dates listed. Please see Utah Division of Wildlife website www.wildlife.utah.gov for specific dates.

Mule deer: Limited entry opportunities available on the West Desert/Vernon Unit #19. General season buck hunting available on the Oquirrh and Stansbury Unit #18, and West Desert/Deep Creek Unit #19. Pronghorn antelope: Limited entry permits for Rush Valley Unit #18, West Desert Riverbed Unit #19, West Desert Snake Valley Unit #19, and Puddle Valley Unit #1. Numerous seasons and dates listed. Please see Utah Division of Wildlife website www.wildlife.utah.gov for specific dates.

Cougar: Limited entry for West Desert/Tintic-Vernon Unit, and Oquirrh/Stansbury Unit. Please see Utah Division of Wildlife website www.wildlife.utah.gov for specific dates.

WATERFOWL

Ducks: Best locations are Timpie, Horseshoe, Blue Lake, Fitzgerald and Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge (Juab County). Species: Mallards, Pintails, Wigeons, Gadwalls, Teals, Shovelers, Ring-Necked, Scaup, Canvas Back, Red Heads, and Common Snipe. Geese: Canadian Geese at Timpie, Horseshoe, Blue Lake, Fitzgerald and Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge (Juab County).

 

UPLAND GAME

Rio Grande Turkeys: Available on the Oquirrh, Stansbury, Sheeprock, Simpson and Deep Creek Mountains. Please see Utah Division of Wildlife website www.wildlife.utah.gov for specific dates.

Chukars: Found on all mountain ranges county wide. Requires Upland Game permit. Please see Utah Division of Wildlife website www.wildlife.utah.gov for specific dates.

Pheasant: Mostly found in Tooele and Rush Valley areas, primarily on private land. Other opportunities are available at commercial hunting areas. Please see Utah Division of Wildlife website www.wildlife.utah.gov for more information.

Quail: Available on Carr Fork Wildlife Management Area, and Deep Creek Mountains. Please see Utah Division of Wildlife website www.wildlife.utah.gov for specific dates.

Forest Grouse: Available in most alpine areas in the Oquirrh, Stansbury, Sheeprock and Deep Creeks Mountains. Please see Utah Division of Wildlife website www.wildlife.utah.gov for specific dates.

Strong partnerships between landowners, officials, and several sportsmen organizations, are a major force behind Tooele County’s vibrant hunting environment. For a hunting adventure in America’s West that’s rugged, unique—and mostly unknown outside of Utah—come and discover Tooele County.

Except otherwise posted, hunting is prohibited in military operation areas, and Indian reservations in Skull Valley and Ibapah. All croplands are considered no-trespassing areas, unless permission is granted from landowner. Glass containers are prohibited on all public lands in Tooele County.
