August 10 – 16 and again September 13 – 16, 2019

Imagine standing on a place so flat and unobstructed that you can see the curvature of the earth on the horizon. The ground is also covered by glistening white salt for miles around. This is the Bonneville Salt Flats on the northwestern edge of Tooele County near Wendover, and this is where land speed racing has occurred every year since 1914.

A remnant of ancient Lake Bonneville that once covered the Great Basin region, the Salt Flats are renowned for being the “Fastest Place on Earth.” The racing season typically begins with Speed Week during the third week of August. An annual event, Speed Week is organized by the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA), and drivers with their aerodynamic machines try to set new records. The SCTA also hosts the World Finals racing on the Salt Flats during early October. The Utah Salt Flats Racing Association hosts the World of Speed, which is usually scheduled for mid September.

The nearby Silver Island Mountains provide surreal landscape views, and atop Floating Island are flat plateaus and caves etched by Lake Bonneville and inhabited by native residents over 10,000 years ago.
